Conor Hourihane: 'People might start respecting us that little bit more now'

Conor Hourihane said that he thinks teams might start respecting the Republic of Ireland a bit more following the late draw against Switzerland on Thursday evening.

The Aston Villa midfielder spoke after the game where Ireland saw their lead cut at the top of the Group D table by two points to Denmark.

“People might start respecting us that little bit more now,” the 28-year-old said.

“We’ve had some very good results. A point against Denmark and Switzerland again tonight so like I said people might start giving us a little bit more respect now

“That never say die attitude – it’s kind of born into us throughout the years and tonight we showed that character.

“That’s born into us, I think. That never say die attitude is always there, but we want to play better at times. It was important not to get beaten here tonight so credit to the lads for not getting beat.

“(Mick McCarthy) was delighted. It's a massive point, we're unbeaten now and it keeps the confidence high after an unbeaten start.”

The former Plymouth Argyle and Barnsley midfield star added; “We just wanted to keep going and keep giving our all and see what we could try and muster up.

“Obviously, they went up one-nil and we showed a bit of character to come back and get a good draw.

“Coming back to get that goal is always going to lift everyone – the fans and those in the dressing room so we’ll take it.”
