Watch: Former Rovers striker Padraig Amond shoots Newport County to FA Cup giant-killing over Premier League Leicester City

Former Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers Padraig Amond was the hero for English League Two side Newport County as they pulled off an FA Cup giant-killing at home to Leicester City.

The Carlow man struck from the penalty spot five minutes from time after West Ham United loanee Vashon Neufville’s cross had been handled in the area by Mark Albrighton.

30-year-old Amond had given Newport the lead against Tottenham Hotspur at Rodney Parade in last season’s fourth round only for the Premier League outfit to score a late equaliser.

It looked grim for the Welsh side three minutes earlier when their stubborn resistance was broken by a wonderfully-struck effort from Rachid Ghezzal after Joe Day had denied James Maddison.

Michael Flynn’s side had led from the tenth minute when Jamille Matt got on the end of Robbie Wilmott’s right-wing cross and angled a header expertly into the corner.

The Premier League side dominated possession for the majority of the game but lacked the creative spark to get in behind Newport in the absence of striker Jamie Vardy.

They looked on course to at least take the game back to a replay at the King Power Stadium when Ghezzal crashed his effort home.

Amond, who triggered a year’s extension on his current deal with County earlier this week, had other ideas however and he sent Danny Ward the wrong way from 12 yards.
