O'Neill adds nine to squad ahead of Uruguay clash

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill has added strength in depth to his squad in anticipation of the visit of Uruguay to the Aviva Stadium on Sunday 4 June.

Nine players have linked up with the squad: Keiren Westwood, John O'Shea, Robbie Brady, Jeff Hendrick, Glenn Whelan, Harry Arter, Aiden McGeady, Jonny Hayes and Jonathan Walters while Stephen Quinn has linked up with the squad for training only.

“In terms of the other players coming in it’s really a lot of the Premier League players. Harry Arter and Glenn Whelan will come in tomorrow as well and funnily enough we have Stephen Quinn training with us he’s been asked to train just for a few days he’s obviously still recovering from his ordeal over the course of the season,” said Martin O’Neill speaking to FAI TV.

The incoming group will add to the 19-man panel that travelled to New York for last Thursday’s 3-1 friendly defeat to Mexico.

Stephen Gleeson, scorer of Ireland’s only goal in the match against Mexico, leaves the squad as he travels to Portugal to get married.

The Boys in Green welcome Uruguay to Dublin this Sunday before they continue their World Cup Qualifying campaign against Austria in the Aviva Stadium the following week on Sunday 11 June.
