Casey: “Crumlin will be delighted”

Shelbourne Chairman Joe Casey was pleased with the FAI Ford Cup Draw on Monday night which saw his side be drawn away to fellow Dubliners and Leinster Senior League outfit, Crumlin United.

“We’re happy enough with it; it could have been a lot worse. It could have been a trip to Ballybofey or Fanad or Cork so we’re happy enough that it’s in Dublin. Crumlin will be delighted.”

Casey has seen his side recover from a couple of poor results in April to position themselves four points off the lead, with a game in hand, after last Friday's difficult win away at Wexford Youths.

“It was a very tough game. They have improved greatly since we last met - I was very impressed. Then Waterford got a result that no one expected, but they are a good side.”

Waterford’s result, to which Casey refers, was of course their 4-1 demolition of Sporting Fingal on Friday - a result that has only underlined the strength of Stephen Henderson’s side. When asked what he thought of the bookies early odds of 14/1 for Waterford to win the division, Casey replied they were ‘false’ odds, alluding to the strength in the team.

“They are a very good team. They’ve gotten a few Cobh players in there with Stephen Henderson and they’re doing a good job. And now if we win our game in hand we are only a point behind UCD.”

Shelbourne’s game in hand comes away at Finn Harps, following a controversial postponement after a very late pitch inspection uncovered an unplayable surface in Ballybofey recently. “We are hoping to get that game in before the break. There is no date confirmed as yet but we’re hoping to get it out of the way before the break,” he added.
