Jonathan Walters named Three Senior International Player of the Year
The annual Three FAI international Awards took place in Dublin on Sunday evening where the stand out performers in Irish football across 2015 were honoured for their efforts.
Stoke City striker Jonathan Walters was the big winner on the night as he beat off competition from Robbie Brady and Wes Hoolahan to be crowned the Senior International Player of the Year for the first time.
Walters played a pivotal role in helping Martin O’Neil’s side qualify for Euro 2016. He notched five goals across the qualifying campaign including a brace against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the second leg of the playoff round to secure passage to France.
Shane Long’s unforgettable winning goal against Germany last October was named as Goal of the Year ahead of Robbie Brady’s strike against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Walters' goal against Georgia inSeptember.
Brady did manage to get his hands on an award however as he was chosen as Young International Player of the Year with Derby County pairing Cyrus Christie and Jeff Hendrick missing out.
Former Dundalk star Richie Towel was selected as Airtricity League Player of the Year following his phenomenal performances for the 2015 Premier Division champions last season where he scored 29 goals in all competitions, including an extra-time winner against Cork City in the FAI Cup final.
Towell, now of Brighton and Hove Albion, beat former Dundalk teammates Daryl Horgan and Andy Boyle to the prize.
Former Cork City midfielder Alan Browne was announced as the Under 21 Player of the Year with Denise O’Sullivan, formerly of Cork City Women and Glasgow City, picking up the Senior Women’s International Player of the Year.
