Dundalk have confirmed the signing of former Cork City midfielder George O'Callaghan.

The controversial 29-year old has signed on at Oriel Park after being released by English League One side Tranmere Rovers earlier this month.

Dundalk boss Sean Connor has moved for the player after he missed out on former Bohemians midfielder Stephen O'Donnell, who opted instead for Cork City.

Having joined Port Vale at the age of 16, O'Callaghan returned to Ireland in 2002 to sign for his hometown club Cork City. In 2005, he was named the eircom League Player of the Year.

He then left Cork to sign for Ipswich Town in 2007, and was duly sent off on his debut for a stamp on Watford defender Danny Shittu. After a loan-spell at Brighton Hove Albion at the end of 2007, O'Callaghan was released by Ipswich in January 2008.

He opted to try his luck again at Cork, signing a three year contract on Leeside. However, just six months into the deal, O'Callaghan decided last summer to head across the Irish sea once more to sign on at Tranmere. The midfielder struggled to make an impact at the club and, after being limited to just six starts, he was released earlier this month.
