Paddy Madden signs for Scunthorpe United

Former Bohemian F.C. striker Paddy Madden has ended a frustrating season with Yeovil Town by signing for Sky Bet League 2 side Scunthorpe United on a two-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The Dubliners decision to drop down two leagues is a brave one, but with chances at Yeovil limited in recent times and Scunthorpe riding high in the English fourth tier, Madden could find himself climbing the English football ladder once again very shortly.

Speaking to scunthorpe-united.co.uk, Madden expressed his delight at the move and the promotion push for the Iron.

“I can’t wait to help Scunthorpe with their promotion push. I’m relishing the chance to play for Scunthorpe and help them do well. I have had the feeling of promotion last season with Yeovil and I am hungry for more promotion so I am excited by this new challenge.

“Things were not working out at Yeovil Town so when I got told the chairman and gaffer here was on to me I was interested."

Madden initially joined Yeovil on loan in October 2012 from his first English club Carlisle United. After a sensational run of goalscoring form boss Gary Johnson snapped him up on a permanent deal, later describing him “the bargain of the season”.

The Coolock man ended the season with 22 goals in 35 games and his most influential strike was undoubtedly the stunning opener in the 2-1 League 1 Playoff Final victory over Brentford.

Madden has also been capped once by his country in the scoreless friendly draw with Wales in August 2013.

Whilst in the League of Ireland, Madden became a regular with Bohemians, scoring 14 times for the Gypsies, and also featured on loan for Shelbourne in 2009 scoring six times. Madden joins fellow Irish man and ex-Irish International Eddie Nolan at Glanford Park and will look to make an instant impact if he turns out to face Mansfield Town on Saturday.
