James McCarthy will partner Jeff Hendrick in the centre of midfield for Ireland as they take on reigning European and World Cup champions Spain at the Yankee Stadium on Wednesday morning (1am Irish time).

With eight players withdrawing from the squad, Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has made a number of changes from the side that recorded a 3-0 win over Faroe Islands. Paul McShane, Darren O’Dea and Stephen Kelly come into the defence - joining Sean St Ledger – in place of John O’Shea and Marc Wilson.

Former Sligo Rovers player Seamus Coleman moves into midfield where he is joined by the returning James McCarthy and Jeff Hendrick with Andy Keogh completing the midfield quartet.

After his hat trick last Friday night Robbie Keane retains his place and is joined by former UCD player Conor Sammon.

Former Galway United man David Forde retains his place in goal for the fixture in New York. James McClean will have to settle for a place on the bench.
