Johnny McDonnell named as new Shelbourne manager

Shelbourne have announced Johnny McDonnell as their new manager.

The former St Patrick's Athletic boss joins the club after a spell as assistant manager to the Faroe Islands.

McDonnell has 20 playing years experience in the League of Ireland and has coached Dublin City. The well respected manager takes over after the departure of Alan Mathews and is expected to confirm his backroom team next week.

The experienced boss McDonnell takes charge of a Shelbourne side rooted to the bottom of the table with just one league win from 14 matches.

"The Board chose John not just for his experience but also because of his genuine belief that the Club's results can improve sufficiently over the remainder of the season for it to retain its position in the Premier Division," a statement read.

Shelbourne face Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght stadium this evening.
