Shanahan returns to Oriel for a third spell
Dundalk have announced the signing of goalkeeper Aaron Shanahan as understudy to Peter Cherrie.
The former Athlone Town netminder is returning for his third spell at the club having been contracted to the side first in 2005 under Jim Gannon and again in 2008 under John Gill during the Lilywhites promotion winning season. Shanahan teams up once again with Stephen Kenny who signed him last summer for Shamrock Rovers.
The 28 year-old began his league of Ireland career with the border club in 2005 before heading on to Kilkenny City. He returned to Oriel Park form the 2008 season to challenge Chris Bennion for the number 1 spot but injury blighted his season. He had a brief spell with Athlone Town and also played for midland rivals Longford Town before moving to County Louth to represent Dundalk’s neighbours Drogheda United in 2011 before finding his way to Tallaght where he was a squad member for the Hoops.
Shanahan is Kenny’s second signed goalkeeper and 19th signing overall. He joins the re-signed Eoghan Osbourne, John Mountney, Stephen McDonnell, Chris Shields and Peter Cherrie along with the new recruits of John Dillon, Patrick Hoban, Keith Ward, Andy Boyle, Dane Massey,Tiarnan Mulvenna, Richie Towell, Stephen O’Donnell, Kurtis Byrne, Mark Rossiter, Vinny Faherty, Darren Meenan and John Sullivan. These are busy times for the Lilywhites and further signings are expected in the coming days as Kenny finalises his squad. Stay tuned to extratime.iefor all the latest news from Oriel Park!
