Dunleavy continues wait for debut
Ballybofey native Johnny Dunleavy will have to wait to make his league debut for Barnet after being an unused substitute against Shrewsbury in the Npower League Two on Saturday.
The 19-year-old joined the London club on a one-month loan deal from Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday but having been on the sidelines for the last month with a back injury, stayed on the bench for the 1-1 draw at Underhill. The result means that Barnet are now in 22nd position in the fourth tier of English football. A Mark Hughes own goal put the visitors ahead on 27 minutes before a last minute leveller from Charlie Taylor.
Dunleavy, who has captained Wolves reserves and Republic of Ireland underage sides, first joined the Molineux academy in 2007 from his local club Ballybofey United and is currently on a professional contract with the Premier League club. However, speaking on Friday, he was delighted to get the chance to go an gain some first-team experience.
“I only found out on Tuesday evening that there was a concrete offer from Barnet and there was no real deciding in it,” he said. “There had been a few rumours beforehand but I spoke to the gaffer (Mick McCarthy) and we decided it would be a good benefit for me to go and get some league experience under my belt.
“I had my first training session with Barnet on Thursday and they’re a great bunch of lads who haven’t had much luck this season. They had three different players who suffered leg breaks at the start of the season but Paul Fairclough has just taken over as manager here so hopefully it will go well. I’m really looking forward to it.”
Dunleavy will be keeping his fingers crossed in regards making his debut this coming week, as Barnet take on Macclesfield at Moss Rose.
