Gallagher looking for consistency
Finn Harps manager James Gallagher revealed a few home truths were required in a clear-the-air meeting with his first team squad before their 1-1 draw with Limerick FC at Finn Park on Friday.
Gallagher has been frustrated with the hit-and-miss form that his side have shown of late and made his feelings known before the game. And although he was understandably unwilling to go into the finer details of the meeting, it seemed to have the desired effect as his team produced a battling performance in a 1-1 draw.
“I spoke to the players before the game and I didn’t hold back at all,” he said. “I was as honest as I could be with them with how I feel some of the performances are going. The inconsistency thing is just not good enough.”
“We can go out one week and play well and then go out another week and be totally different and that’s just not acceptable. When you’re dealing with 16 or 18 individuals there might be one or two that are off-colour, and you can accept that, but not when it’s a whole team in general.” “But we had a good chat about it and if we can see an improvement between now and the end of the season then we can be happy with that. Tonight we were competitive.”
Gallagher’s Harps went ahead when Tommy Bonner headed them into a fourth minute lead and although Shane Clarke produced a fine leveller, it was a decent encounter with no quarter given. “Things haven’t been going as well as we would’ve liked but that was a great example of what it takes to grind out a result,” Gallagher continues. “That’s a team going for promotion and we had to battle with them. I’ve played in loads of them games. For me, it was a typical First Division game.”
“Everyone demands results and performances and tonight there was a lot of pleasing aspects. We competed all over the pitch and there was a good work ethic from the start till the end. We were a little more comfortable after the break and were wary of them getting in behind.” “That’s what they do and we spoke about it before the game and in that respect it was a little disappointing to concede the way in which we did, but there were a lot of good performances there tonight.”
