MK Dons have confirmed the return of midfielder Alex Gilbey, the club's former two-time Player of the Year.

The 28-year-old player will officially rejoin the club after the end of his current contract with Charlton Athletic this June.

Gilbey previously made a total of 105 appearances for MK Dons between 2017 and 2020, contributing significantly to the club's promotion from Sky Bet League Two in the 2018/19 season.

Since leaving MK Dons, he played 111 games for Charlton Athletic and Stevenage, achieving yet another promotion from Sky Bet League Two with the latter in the last season.

Expressing his delight, Gilbey said in an interview with MK Dons, "I’m over the moon. As soon as I found out there was interest, I wanted to get this done because I wanted to come home and come back to the Club."

He added that he had "unfinished business" and was eager to contribute to the Club's success.

Born in Dagenham, Gilbey started his professional football journey with Colchester United in 2012, making 121 appearances between 2012 and 2016.

After a successful season with Wigan Athletic, he joined MK Dons in August 2017, quickly becoming a fan favourite.

Gilbey's recent stint was with Charlton Athletic, where he played 66 times, also spending a season on loan at Stevenage, contributing significantly to their Sky Bet League Two promotion-winning campaign.

MK Dons' Head Coach Graham Alexander, speaking about the signing, highlighted the importance of experience in their recruitment drive.

He said, “We will sign any player that has the right attributes but there is a need to bring in some know-how and winning experience and Alex brings all that, having been promoted twice from this division, just last season and with this Club as well."

Alexander went on to add, "I know he has a real affection for this Football Club and looking in the whites of his eyes, I saw the motivation he has to do well for all the right reasons. I think we have a really good player on our hands.”
