Leinster Senior Cup Report: UCD 1 - 1 Dundalk (Dundalk win 6-5 on penalties)

Three days after lifting their first cup trophy of the season, Dundalk sealed their place in the final of the Leinster Senior Cup thanks to a penalty shoot-out win over UCD in Belfield.
Substitute Adam Finnegan netted the decisive sixth penalty in sudden death after Liam Scales had seen his spot-kick saved by Gabriele Sava, the game having finished 1-1 after extra time.
Gary O'Neill had given the Students a first half lead from the spot, a goal that looked set to take them through to a first final in 12 years against Shelbourne.
Dundalk's forgotten man Conor Clifford netted a long-range effort six minutes from time, however, to ensure the game went the distance and the Lilywhites prevailed in the shootout.
Dundalk boss Stephen Kenny retained three of the side that prevailed in the EA Sports Cup final against Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght, in captain Shane Grimes, Sean Hoare and Gabriele Sava.
He also gave starts to six of the side that beat UCD in the Enda McGuill under-19 cup final on Thursday, while Collie O'Neill stuck with the majority of his senior side.
O'Neill's opener came slightly against the run of play at the end of a first half that was fiercely competitive, with both sides playing attractive football, but short of real goal chances.
Liam Scales glanced a free header wide from a good position for UCD while Carlton Ubaezuono saw his right-footed shot tipped over by Niall Corbet after cutting inside Dan Tobin.
A UCD counter-attack through Daire O'Connor saw the number 10 pick out the run inside of Jason McClelland, but from inside the box the winger pulled his shot past the post.
Indeed, the half appeared to be headed for a goalless conclusion when another counter from the Students yielded a penalty slightly against the run of play.
Rob Manley showed good pace to beat Steven Kinsella on the right and drive towards the box, where he was hacked down by James Woods and the referee pointed to the spot.
Captain O'Neill stepped up and sent Gabriele Sava the wrong way from 12 yards and send his side in a goal to the good, just as he had the last time the sides met in the EA Sports Cup in April.
Everton loanee Steven Kinsella stung Corbet's palms with a swerving drive early in the second period, while O'Connor was frustrated as he could only head Liam Scales' cross wide.
The Students were looking to find the killer blow and substitute Ben Hanrahan – on for the injured Georgie Kelly – and O'Neill forced saves from Sava in rapid succession.
The Lilywhites appeared to have little in the tank when, with six minutes remaining, Clifford levelled the scores with a furious shot from 30 yards that arrowed into the top corner.
Now it was the visitors in the ascendancy and the Students looking tired, but the home side did create one more chance in normal time but Hanrahan couldn't turn O'Connor's header on goal.
Having bagged a late reprieve, Dundalk were the livelier side in extra time and UCD had the heroics of Corbet to thank for ensuring they stayed in the contest.
First the goalkeeper was at full stretch to get a strong hand to Eric Whelan's glancing header, a fantastic reaction save when all in the ground thought Dundalk had taken the lead.
Shortly afterwards, Corbet was at it again and pulled off an identical save from Sean Hoare before springing up to block the rebound from sub Aaron Townley.
Both sides appeared content to settle for penalties in the final period of extra time as the immense physical exertion appeared to take its toll.
And so it came down to kicks from 12 yards and, after both sides had scored each of their first set of five, Scales saw his left-footed shot saved and Finnegan slotted home to
