Joe started out at local Cork side Everton AFC and soon joined up with the youth team at Cork City. He made his senior debut in July 2000 against Bohemians in the Super Cup but made only 8 league appearances before moving to Reading

Over the following four years Joe made only 7 league appearances for Reading but he did enjoy a loan spell at Barnet where he made 40 appearances in the 2003/04 season.

Joe returned to Cork City in the summer of 2004 and made 140 league appearances for the club over the next five and a half seasons. In 2005 he was part of the City side that claimed the league title and he also picked up winners medals in the 2007 FAI Cup and the 2008 Setanta Cup.

However, amid financial turmoil at Cork, he signed for Hartlepool United in January 2010. He made 32 appearances and scored three goals over the following one and a half seasons before being released in May 2011.

One month later he signed for Pat Scully at Limerick FC, along with former Cork City and Hartlepool team mate Denis Behan. Joe's Limerick debut came in a 1-0 win away to Athlone Town on 16 July 2011 and he made 12 league appearances in his first season with the club. In 2012 Joe added 21 league appearances to his tally and scored three goals as Limerick won the First Division title.

Joe re-signed for the 2013 season as Limerick competed in the Premier Division. He also captained the team when injuries kept regular captain Pat Purcell on the sidelines. He went on to make 27 league appearances for Limerick that year as they finished 7th in the league but he was released at the end of the season. Joe then moved abroad, signing for Singapore side DPMM FC where he played for two years before returning to Ireland to pursue a role in coaching.

At international level, Joe was a regular in the Irish U21 side and won two caps for the senior side, against Ecuador and Bolivia, during a tour of the United States in May of 2007.

Joe returned to Limerick in November 2016 as Strength and Conditioning Coach.
