Dessie is a former Ireland U21 an 'B' international who played under-age football with Stella Maris before joining Manchester United as a 15 year old. Dessie won the FA Youth League and Cup with the Red Devils but failed to secure a professional contract at Old Trafford and, after a brief spell at Oldham Athletic, he returned to Ireland in the summer of 1996.
Dessie joined Shelbourne at the start of the 1996/97 season and made his debut against UCD at Belfield on 15th December 1996. He made 18 appearances in his debut season and went on to make 154 appearances over the next six seasons. He helped Shels to the League and Cup double in '99/00 and in '01/02 he won a second league title at the club.
But the tide was turning for Dessie. He had made just 11 appearances in that second title winning season and in '02/03, under new manager Pat Fenlon, he appeared just 2 times for the Reds, adding a third appearance while on loan at UCD. In the transitional 2003 season, Dessie didn't make any appearances at all.
In January 2004 Dessie signed for Alan Mathews at Longford Town where he won the FAI Cup in 2004, adding a League Cup winners medal that same season. He made 106 league appearances in his four year stay at Flancare Park, and appeared in another FAI Cup final in 2007, when Longford lost 1-0 to Cork City.
Longford were relegated at the end of the 2007 season and Dessie signed for Shamrock Rovers in December of that year. He made his debut for the Hoops on 8 March 2008 in a 1-0 away win over Drogheda United and made 12 appearances before being loaned out to Dundalk in July. By the end of '08 he had made 10 appearances with the Lilywhites and picked up a First Division title medal.
He returned to Shamrock Rovers for 2009 and scored eight times in 32 appearances but at the end of 2010 Dessie retired, walking off into the sunset with one final league title medal. In his final game he appeared as a substitute in the 2010 FAI Cup final in which the Hoops lost to Sligo Rovers after a penalty shootout.
