Ryan joined Bohemians in the pre-season of 2008 and made his first team debut in a 4-3 win over Shelbourne in the EA Sports Cup in May 2009. Ryan made his league debut shortly afterwards in a 1-0 win over Drogheda United on 22 May at Dalymount Park.

At the beginning of 2010 Ryan went on loan to Longford Town where he made 14 league appearances for the First Division side. In July of 2010 he returned briefly to Bohemians before going back out on loan to Athlone Town for the remainder of the season.

In February 2011 he was back in Bohemians colours but remained with the A Championship side until late August when he began to reappear for the senior side on the substitutes bench, finally making 4 league appearances in the latter stages of the season.

Ryan was part of the Bohemians squad for the 2012 season and played 19 league games, scoring five goals, as the club finished sixth. He played 29 more league games in the 2013 season, and scored six goals in the process, as Bohemians narrowly avoided the relegation play-offs and finished tenth. Ryan re-signed for Bohemians for the 2014 season and made another 11 league appearances for Bohs as they finished seventh in the 2014 Premier Division. In January 2015, Ryan ended his six-year stint with Bohemians and moved to Premier Division rivals Bray Wanderers.

Ryan went on to play in every league game for the Seagulls in 2015, netting twice in a 2-2 draw with Limerick, as Bray finished eighth in the Premier Division. He was also a part of the side that reached the semi-finals of the FAI Cup, going out to Cork City by a slim 1-0 defeat. In November 2015, Ryan moved to McKelvey Celtic and shortly afterwards he departed for Australia where he played for Essendon Royals.

Ryan returned to Ireland one year later and in February 2017 he signed for Pete Mahon at newly promoted Drogheda United.
