Jody Byrne

Jody started his League of Ireland career at Dundalk in 1981 under manager Jim McLaughlin. Most of his time at Oriel Park was spent as understudy to Richie Blackmore but he did manage to displace him towards the end of the 1982/83 season.

When McLaughlin left Dundalk to take over the reins at Shamrock Rovers in the summer of 1983, Jody followed him and was immediately installed as first choice keeper at Milltown. He went on to spend seven seasons with the Hoops in a trophy laden spell that ended in 1990 when he left Rovers to sign for Shelbourne. He left the Hoops with four League titles under his belt, as well as three FAI Cup wins.

Jody spent four years with Shelbourne, adding another League title to his collection in 1991/92, and also winning another FAI Cup winners medal when the Reds beat Dundalk in the 1992/93 final. In the Summer of 1994 Jodi returned to Oriel Park to sign for Dundalk for the second time. He stayed for just one season, although that was long enough to add a sixth League title to his career tally. He moved on from Oriel Park in August of 1995 to join Cork City.

Jody also spent just one season with Cork, taking a free transfer at the end of 1995/96 and signing for Drogheda United in July of '96. One year later he was released by Drogheda and in early September of 1997 he answered an emergency call from Tommy Lynch, the player/manager at Waterford United.

Waterford keeper, Michael Devine, had broken a thumb and was out for six weeks, so Jodi stepped in as cover. One month later, with Devine recovered, Jody signed for Charlie McGeever at Finn Harps and was off to the opposite end of the country where he played for the rest of the 1997/98 season.

In the Summer of 1998, having left Finn Harps, Jody returned south to sign a permanent deal at Waterford United and he went on to spend two seasons there, mostly as back up to first choice keeper, Devine. He left the Blues at the end of 1999/00, a season that saw the Blues relegated to the First Division.

Having left Waterford Jody was without a club until transfer deadline day in February 2001 when he signed for St Patrick's Athletic. He was with the Saints for the remainder of the 2000/01 season and then spent some time coaching at Bray Wanderers and Dublin City.
