Live Updates for Cork City -v- Derry City

Updates by Diarmuid Daly

90' + 4'

That's all from me. Have a good night, folks.

90' + 4'

Cork City are left to reflect on a truly miserable season and will be playing their football in the second tier (assuming, of course, that there is a second tier) in 2021. Derry are safe but will have wanted more than a seventh-placed finish from their campaign. They do however have an FAI Cup quarter-final away to Sligo Rovers next weekend to look forward to.

90' + 4'

And that's the last action of the SSE Airtricity League season for these two. Although Derry looked marginally the more polished side, the hosts were dogged and after Beineoin O'Brien-Whitmarsh gave them the lead in the 59th minute, Cian Bargary should have put the game beyond the visitors midway through the second half. However, in a microcosm of the Leesiders' season, their failure to capitalise while on top was punished and James Akintunde snatched a point for the Candystripes when he bundled home after good work from Adam Hammill with a quarter of an hour to play.

90' + 4'

FULL TIME!

The game has ended between Cork City and Derry City.

90' + 4'

Almost a winner for Cork City at the last. After Dale Holland wins a corner on the right, O'Connor finally gets his delivery right and finds Cian Murphy alone eight yards out. Murphy can't connect properly, and although Coleman manages to bring the ball down, his shot is into the side-netting when it looked easier to score.

90' + 3'

A nice move from Derry founders when Clifford slips on the edge of the hosts' area, and then handles the ball on the ground.

90' + 1'

Three more minutes of this.

90'

Ochieng buys a cheap free-kick off Bruna. However O'Connor's set-piece is again poor and Cherrie gathers easily.

86'

Huge chance for Derry. Hammill breaks between Holland and Ochieng down the left. His cutback from the bye-line is met by Conor McCormack, but he can't find the target from six yards and his side-footed effort runs wide of the far post.

84'

Very scrappy for the last few minutes, as neither side can get a foothold.

83'

Substitution

Dale Holland (in) - Dylan McGlade (out) (Cork City).

83'

Substitution

Cian Murphy (in) - Beineon O'Brien Whitmarsh (out) (Cork City).

81'

Substitution

Ciaron Harkin (in) - Walter Figueira (out) (Derry City).

76'

Derry equalise! Hammill is sent away down the left, and while his cross is superbly cut out by a skyward flick from O'Brien, Akintunde is on hand to head past McNulty for the leveller.

76'

GOAL!

James Akintunde (Derry City) scores.

74'

Byrne is booked for bringing down a galloping Hammill, and O'Brien follows him into the book for kicking the ball away. Hammill's free-kick is abysmal, however, and flies into the St. Anne's end.

73'

Yellow Card

Jake O'Brien (Cork City) is booked.

73'

Yellow Card

Alec Byrne (Cork City) is booked.

68'

Huge chance for the home side! Cherrie inexplicably passes the ball straight to Bargary in splendid isolation 25 yards out. Bargary fluffs his lines, however, and his effort at the gaping goal is high and wide. That could have been that.

67'

Yellow Card

Dylan McGlade (Cork City) is booked.

McGlade is booked for failing to retreat from the ball after he concedes a free-kick on the hosts' right wing.

66'

Clifford's effort from distance is parried into a dangerous area by McNulty, but no player in stripes can capitalise.

63'

Bargary tries a shot from distance, but Cherrie isn't unduly worried.

62'

Yellow Card

Gerardo Bruna (Derry City) is booked.

60'

The hosts lead! Bargary carries down the left and although he underhits his pass to Morrissey, the captain can spoon out a pass to Whitmarsh in the box. The youngster swivels and beats Cherrie from ten yards for his first league goal.

60'

ASSIST!

Gearóid Morrissey (Cork City) provides the assist.

60'

The hosts lead! Bargary carries down the left and although he underhits his pass to Morrissey, the captain can spoon out a pass to Whitmarsh in the box. The youngster swivels and beats Cherrie from ten yards for his first league goal.

59'

GOAL!

Beineon O'Brien Whitmarsh (Cork City) scores.

56'

Morrissey shows lovely balance to escape the attentions of two Derry midfielders and release McGlade, whose cross is deflected behind for a corner. However O'Connor's delivery after a short corner is, to put it mildly, disappointing.

55'

Some light relief, as McJannett has a rush of blood and blooters one high and wide from distance.

54'

Substitution

Gerardo Bruna (in) - Joe Thomson (out) (Derry City).

53'

Figueira can run at O'Brien and Byrne after Hammill's free-kick runs long. The ball squirts to McJannett, who does well to win a corner.

52'

The luckless Hurley also picks up a booking for his troubles.

51'

Yellow Card

Ronan Hurley (Cork City) is booked.

50'

Ronan Hurley looks to be in trouble after a clash between himself and Adam Hammill. Derry get the free-kick but Hurley has come out the worse.

49'

Hammill's corner leads to another, this one is cleared more effectively and City have a throw-in underneath the Donie Forde stand.

47'

Narrow escape for the Leesiders as Figueira smacks one from outside the box. It looks to be goal-bound but flicks off a defender and runs narrowly wide for a corner.

46'

Welcome back for the second half of tonight's tie. No changes on either side at the break.

46'

SECOND HALF

The second half between Cork City and Derry City has started.

45' + 1'

HALF TIME

It is half-time between Cork City and Derry City.

45'

Hammill's free-kick from the right is met at the back post by a ruck of players. The ball loops over McNulty's crossbar, and that's the last action of the half.

44'

Yellow Card

Cian Bargary (Cork City) is booked.

44'

Another poor set-piece for the hosts, as Kevin O' Connor's free-kick from deep sails over everyone's head and over the bye-line.

40'

A lull in the action for the last while, as both sides take turns to lose possession.

33'

Huge chance for Derry. Malone finds Hammill in behind Hurley on the right. His cross is onto Akintunde's forehead six yards from goal, but the striker's header is weak and straight at McNulty. Narrow escape for the hosts but Akintunde really should have scored.

32'

Ochieng and McGlade combine on the right side, but the latter's cross is far too long.

30'

The corner is worked short and ends up at the feet of Conor Clifford thirty yards out. His fine strike hits the butt of McNulty's post and rolls across the goal. Desperately unlucky for the visitors.

30'

Akintunde spins adroitly to lose Kevin O'Connor in the Cork City box; however O'Connor and Jake O'Brien between them contrive to block the striker'ss effort for a corner.

27'

This time Bargary overcompensates and can't beat the first man.

27'

An excellent deep cross from McGlade into a dangerous area. Malone has to put it behind for a corner.

23'

Hammill's corner has McNulty flailing, but Derry are penalised for a push and the veteran escapes.

22'

Figueira gets in behind Ochieng. His cutback finds Thomson at the edge of the box, but Byrne gets back to put him off and the ball runs for a corner.

20'

Bargary wins a corner off Hammill on City's right. He takes it himself, but it's overhit and runs wide on the far side.

16'

Bargary advances menacingly as Derry's centre-halves back off. The Tipperary youngster's strike from 25 yards is just the wrong side of Cherrie's upright.

14'

Jake O'Brien has the ball in the net for the home side aafter Dylan McGlade's deep free-kick from the right-hand side, but the assistant's flag was up.

13'

Akintunde rumbles forward for Derry, but his menacing run ends after he's crowded out in the box.

12'

Nice play from Whitmarsh, whose touch from McGlade's pass puts him clear of Coll. However he doesn't back his pace and instead crosses for Bargary, who can't reach the ball in front of goal.

10'

Half-chance for the visitors. Hammill's central free-kick from forty yards out is clipped to the middle of the box. City clear the first ball, but an advancing Hammill comes onto the clearance. His snapshot flies five yards to the right of McNulty's goal.

8'

Decent chance for the home side. Cherrie's clearance is poor, but McGlade can't capitalise as his effort from the edge of the box flies over the relieved Scottish goalkeeper's bar and into the St. Anne's end.

7'

First chance for Cork City as O'Brien-Whitmarsh wriggles free in the box and squares for Bargary. The youngster's effort is blocked and Ochieng smashes the rebound high and wide from outside the box.

4'

Akintunde puts Figueira away after Ochieng's attempted clearance is charged down. However the winger dallies on the ball and his eventual effort is deflected into McNulty's arms.

3'

Neither side has yet carved out an opportunity, with the visitors having most of the possession so far.

0'

GAME ON!

The game between Cork City and Derry City has kicked off.

0'

Derry are two points ahead of Finn Harps and level with Shelbourne; however they have a much better goal difference than both of their rivals.

0'

Derry, however, are looking over their shoulders. The series of results that would see their season extended to a promotion/relegation play-off is unlikely, but stranger things have happened this season.

0'

The Leesiders, of course, have nothing to play for this evening. Their season-long ineptitude has led to a fate that was confirmed several Saturdays ago when their defeat away to Sligo Rovers allied to Finn Harps’ ambush of Bohemians resulted in their deserved relegation.

0'

The Foylesiders' manager Declan Devine, meanwhile, has made only one change to his line-up from that which started Saturday night's 2-0 defeat to Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght, with James Akintunde coming in for Darren Cole.

0'

The hosts' interim boss Colin Healy has seen fit to make three changes from his charges' last game away to Sligo Rovers, which they lost 2-1. Mark McNulty replaces Liam Bossin in goal, while Dylan McGlade and Cian Bargary replace Joseph Olowu, who has returned to his parent club Arsenal, and Kit Elliott.

0'

Good evening and welcome to this evening's Airtricity League Premier Division fixture between Cork City and Derry City at Turner's Cross. I'm Diarmuid Daly and I'll be keeping you up to date with tonight's action from Leeside; kick-off is at 7:30pm.
