Leinster Senior Cup Report: UCD 2 - 1 Cabinteely

UCD are through to the semi-finals of the Leinster Senior Cup for the second season in a row following a 2-1 victory over South Dublin neighbours Cabinteely in Belfield.
Defender Josh Collins scored the winner 15 minutes from time as he stabbed the ball home following a melee in the six-yard box.
Aaron Robertson had equalised for the visitors early in the second half after UCD captain Gary O'Neill sent his side into the break a goal to the good with his sixth goal of the season.
UCD boss Collie O'Neill put out a strong side including many first team regulars in order to avoid a repeat of these teams' first-ever meeting – a 1-0 win for Cabo in the 2015 EA Sports Cup.
Cabinteely, by contrast, made ten changes from the side that drew 0-0 with Longford Town on Saturday evening with only centre-half Rob Hanlon keeping his starting place.
And there was little to excite in the opening exchanges as neither side managed to forge a clear goalscoring chance in the first quarter, speculative efforts from Cabo's Stephen Ball and Paul Fox the best either side could muster.
That all changed in the 24th minute when a precise through ball from Cian Kavanagh picked out Rob Manley on the run, and the striker used his pace to leave Andrew McDonagh in his shade.
Having initially appeared to take the ball too wide, Manley lifted his head to pick out the late arriving run of O'Neill, and the skipper finished emphatically from six yards.
Striker Manley was almost in again shortly after when a header from his brother Joe, playing at right back, bounced awkwardly in the Cabo box but the ball never quite sat down before Jack Menton arrived to snatch it from the air.
Jason McClelland was finding some joy alternating with number ten Daire O'Connor, and after slicing an O'Connor set-up badly wide he saw a daisy-cutter slip just wide of the post.
Cabo wouldn't really threaten until the final minute of the first half when Fox fizzed a low ball across the face of goal only for an excellent interception from Sean Coyne to deny the arriving Ball.
They wouldn't have to wait long after the break for their second, as Robertson capitalised upon confusion in the UCD defence to poke the ball home from eight yards.
From there, UCD continued to provide the more enterprising play in attack and more good running from Rob Manley down the right yielded another inviting cross but no College player gambled to meet it.
O'Connor's found himself in a pocket of space just after the hour and attempted to squeeze a low shot inside Menton's left-hand that the keeper did wonderfully well to tip behind at full stretch.
Much to the annoyane of the home side, the officials signalled for a free kick, and Menton displayed no outward signs he was annoyed to be denied credit for a top-class stop.
With 15 minutes remaining, UCD's pressure paid off, albeit from a set piece rather than open play.
Kavanagh was again the architect as his corner was allowed bounce inside the six-yard box and, in the melee of waving arms and swooping legs, the ball was forced away and Collins wheeled away in celebration.
The Students continued to attack as they sought to put the prospect of extra time beyond Cabo. Gareth Coughlan shot straight at Menton while Coyne's powerful shot was flicked wide by Hanlon.
They had to endure a late flurry of Cabo pressure to make sure of the result, however.
A counter-attack from his own half by former UCD man Ollie Hamzat could have yielded more than just a corner had the striker showed a little more composure after doing the hard work.
Ball's quick corner resulted in another chance as substitute Karl Byrne swung in a cross for Hanlon, which was heading wide before it took a deflection.
It was to prove Cabo's final chance of taking the tie to an extra 30 minutes, however, as the Students finished the game on the front foot to book their place in the semi-final draw.
