Limerick claimed their first win of the season with a deserved, but nervous 3-2 win over fellow strugglers Sligo Rovers. The hosts raced into a one goal lead early on, but a better showing by Rovers after the break meant a tense closing to proceedings at Markets Field.
With the tie featuring 12th versus 11th, the scrappy opening was to be expected, particularly given the recent signings on display for both sides.
The first real opportunity fell to Sligo. Alan Keane was set free down the left, he squared to Cawley who was denied by Freddy Hall. Lynch then immediately won the ball back in the middle; he let in Faherty and with Peers stranded the Galway native fired beyond Brush with a rasping drive. The first time Limerick led a game since returning to the Markets Field.
Hall smartly saved just minutes later as Cretaro eluded Williams. The Bermudan was out quickly to twart the innovative Cretaro.
Gavin Peers was at fault when he allowed Ian Turner in, but the winger could only place his right-footed shot wide. Lynch finding the hands of Brush moments later.
Peers was booked soon after and was ultimately replaced at the break.
Turner found the head of Faherty, who despite the attentions of a Rovers defender, doubled his sides lead with a looping header.
Faherty almost wrapped the game up before the break, heading over from a delicious Shane Tracy corner.
Just seconds into the second half, Sligo were once again caught in possession, O’Connor slipping Faherty in after winning the ball high-up the pitch, but his strike went wide once again.
Kanyuka then somehow denied Rob Lehane as the visitors finally created openings. Just shy of the hour mark Lehane, a recent loan addition, poked home a right wing from close range to give his side hope.
But on 65 minutes, the game seemed to be all but over. Clancy slipped to allow Lynch in, he found Faherty who in turn found Clarke, despite the best intentions of Jason Hughes. Unfortunately for Hughes, Clarke’s shot was deflected over Brush and trickled over the line. Cretaro then slipped the ball past Williams only for the excellent Hall to push it wide.
But, after a dull 10 minutes, Rovers once again eased back into the tie. Gary Amstrong ghosting in at the back post to finish a Donelon cross. Once again, it was all too easy from Limerick who were struggling to retain the ball.
Limerick came back to life as a clever one-two between Lynch and Turner saw the latter fire against another loanee, Tim Clancy.
Limerick introduced Sean Russell and Cyril Guedje to steady a nervy ship. Sligo pushed for the leveller but the Blues were somewhat resilient.
Their best chance came when Hall was beaten by Cretaro, Shane Tracy hacked the ball off the line as the bulk of the 980 fans were made to sweat even more.
But despite their attempts during the four added minutes, Joey N’dos side couldn’t find the equaliser and his side were left to rue a disjointed first half display. Limerick claim their first win since a 1-0 win over Rovers. The gap reduced to seven with pride restored to the Markets Field outfit.
