FAI Cup - Limerick 1 - 2 Bohemians
- Tom Clancy
- Sun, Jun 08 2014
Goals from Paddy Kavanagh and a superb Steven Beattie goal meant that Rory Gaffney’s strike wasn’t enough as Bohs dumped Limerick out of the FAI Ford Cup. Owen Heary’s men fully deserving of their win as Limerick failed to match their performance level seen in wins over St. Patrick’s Athletic and Drogheda United.
Bohs, playing a 4-4-2 formation, began the game very well. But they had to wait until the 14th minute for their first real opening as the Limerick defence fell asleep. Paddy Kavanagh, who was a menace throughout, got to the end-line and squared to Dinny Corcoran. With the goal at his mercy the striker scuffed a shot which hit the outside of the post, an incredible miss considering he was only seven yards out.
Limerick hit the woodwork moments later as Shane Duggan shot into the ground during a scramble in the penalty area. The ball bounced up onto the top of the bar. It was to be Limerick’s only notable chance of the opening half.
A stuttering Limerick midfield was not aided by the loss of Shane Tracy after just 25 minutes. It was 10 minutes later when the men in green took the lead.
Man of the match Steven Beattie was picked out by Kavanagh. From just inside the area he hit a left-footed shot first time which was far too accurate for Barry Ryan. Delight for the Dublin club, with Limerick left looking for answers.
After the interval Dinny Corcoran was presented with another wonderful chance. It was Beattie who raced down the wing and squared for his strike partner. But Corcoran hit first time and the ball went a couple of yards wide of Barry Ryan’s goal.
The seven-time winners of the Cup didn’t have to wait long to put themselves firmly in the driving seat. An offensive Limerick free-kick didn’t work out and Bohs countered. The reliable Steven Beattie was set free and with two Limerick defenders drawn towards him, Beattie sprayed a wonderful ball to Paddy Kavanagh. He quickly rounded Barry Ryan and fired past the desperate defending of Shaun Kelly.
Limerick, to their credit, found their way back into the game. Duggan’s cross-field ball found Whitehead, who slipped in Gaffney. He finished expertly despite the efforts of Delany. Bohs were adamant that a defender was felled by Gaffney in the build-up.
But that was as good as it got for Limerick, with the Super Blues unable to create much in the closing stages. Few of the 842 in attendance could argue with Bohs deserving victory, they progress to the third round, while it’s back to the drawing board for Limerick once again.
