Monday’s mid-season / pre-season affair in Tallaght Stadium provided a few talking points for those in attendance as Wolverhampton Wanderers ran out 4-1 winners over Shamrock Rovers in an entertaining friendly between the Championship and Airtricity League teams. Both clubs used their squads to their fullest with multiple substitutions in a game played out in front of a mixed crowd of Rovers fans, travelling Wolves supporters and a smattering of Irish based fans of the English team.
Wolves, playing only their second pre-season game having beaten Cheltenham 3-1 last week, lined out with two different starting XIs in each half. Manager Kenny Jacket’s squad included a number of new signings for the Championship team, a smattering of Irishmen and some players stepping up to the first team squad like Declan Weekes who made his Wolves debut on the night. Having gone behind to an early Kirk Millar goal for Rovers, Wolves led at the break after strikes from Leon Clarke, and Irish under 21 player Liam McAlinden. Malian internationals Nouha Dickov and Bakary Sako added the two second half goals for Wolves.
Rovers player Tom Morris didn’t last very long in the game. He started at centre half for the Hoops and barely had got a touch of the ball in the opening couple of minutes before he crumpled under a challenge that saw him having to leave the pitch with a broken nose.
Hoops boss Trevor Croly had only Gary McCabe in his starting XI from the side who lost 1-0 to Dundalk the previous day. Croly brought in a number of Rovers’ First Division players and he also gave a start to a couple of trialists including Swiss midfielder Maxime Vuille. Stephen McPhail, serving a competitive match ban for his recent sending off, started in midfield for Rovers and was involved in the first goal.
With space at a premium on the bench and the rain coming down in Tallaght, a couple of Wolves substitutes Dave Edwards and Kevin McDonald watched the opening quarter of the game from the press box and could clearly see the two goalkeeping errors that were crucial in the first half. Both Irish ‘keepers, Aaron McCarey for Wolves and Craig Hyland for Rovers, handed goals to the opposition. While Wolves won the first corner of the game, it was Rovers who opened the scoring from the next corner. McPhail swung it in with his left foot from the right and McCarey dropped the ball inside the six yard box allowing Millar to tap home.
Wolves having been caught cold by the early goal and the long delay for Morris’ injury took a while to test the Rovers defence. Dutchman Rajiv van La Parra fizzed a shot just wide of the Hoops’ woodwork before Leon Clarke and Liam McAlinden created the equaliser for the visitors mid-way through the half. A couple of minutes previously the two had played a one-two in the box with Clarke forcing a good save from Hyland. Second time around Clarke made no mistake, again off a McAlinden pass.
They doubled their advantage just before the half hour mark when Hyland miscontrolled a backpass with his feet under pressure from McAlinden. He was able to rob the ball off the Rovers ‘keeper and pass it easily into the empty net.
McCabe went closest to get an equaliser for Rovers in the first half while at the other end McAlinden twice went close to scoring the English side’s third goal. First his header came back off the post and then he squandered a chance after Irish international Kevin Foley’s excellent through ball that forced Hyland to make a good save.
It was all change in the second half in terms of personnel for Wolves as Jackett brought on eleven pairs of fresh legs onto the pitch. McDonald set up a great chance for Edwards before Nouha Dickov put Wolves 3-1 up off a pass from Edwards on the left.
A minute before the end former St. Etienne striker Bakary Sako made it four from the penalty spot after Robert Bayly, whose Uncle Richie played for Wolves, had taken down Michael Jacobs. Kenny Jackett’s Wolves squad continue their five day pre-season tour with a game against Bohemians in Dalymount Park on Wednesday evening.
