William, known to all as 'Willo', started his career at Bohemians in the 2000/01 season but in October 2001, aged just 17, he followed ex-Bohs boss Roddy Collins to Carlisle United. Willo played 78 games for the Cumbrian side before returning to Ireland in February 2005 to sign for Collins once again, this time at Shamrock Rovers.

He made his league debut for the Hoops on 18 March 2005 and appeared 31 times over the season, scoring six times. In January of 2006 Willo moved north to sign for Irish League side Glentoran where he spent the next two and a half seasons.

Willo went out on loan at Armagh City in February 2008, where he made 5 appearances, and was released by Glentoran in the summer of that year. He joined Glenavon in August 2008 where he remained until the end of the 2010/11 season. After three seasons with the Glens Willo returned to the League of Ireland, signing for a fourth time for Roddy Collins.

In August 2011 Willo signed for Roddy Collins at Monaghan United and made his debut for the Mons on 18 August in a 3-1 home win over Waterford United. He made 10 league appearances that year and scored once, in a 3-1 defeat away to Cork City, as the Mons won promotion to the Premier Division. But Monaghan's time in the top flight was brief and the club withdrew from the league midway through the 2012 season due to financial pressures.

It didn't take long for Willo to find a new club and in June 2012 he signed for Tony Cousins at Longford Town. He scored on his debut in a 5-4 win away at Mervue United on 29 June and made 23 league appearances over the next one and a half seasons with the club. At the end of 2013 Willo left Longford and in February 2014 he signed for Johnny McDonnell at Shelbourne ahead of their 2014 First Division campaign.

Willo made his Shelbourne debut on the opening weekend of the 2014 First Division season against Wexford Youths at Tolka Park and went on to score twice in 17 league appearances that year.

In 2016/17 Willo played with LSL side Bluebell United.
