Though born in England, Shane grew up in Enfield, Co. Meath. He played underage football with Home Farm and subsequently went to Wolverhampton Wanderers where he spent four years in the club's youth programme.

Released by Wolves in 2001, Shane returned to Ireland and before began his League career at Dublin City where he made 2 league appearances in 2001/02. His stay with the Vikings was short and he spent some time playing with Garda before returning to League action with Longford Town in 2002.

Shane made 81 league appearances for the midlanders over a four year spell before signing for Drogheda United at the start of 2006, where he scored six times in 25 league appearances during his debut season. But in February 2007 Shane suffered a cruciate injury in a Setanta Cup tie against Linfield and he played no part in Drogheda's 2007 title winning campaign.

He returned to action in 2008 but further injuries restricted Shane to just 3 league appearances and with financial storm clouds settling over United Park he left the club at the end of that season.

January 2009 saw Shane sign for Shelbourne but just weeks later he left the Reds due to work commitments, eventually re-signing for Drogheda United in April. He went on to make a further 15 league appearances for Drogheda, scoring four times, before taking a break from football that summer.

Shane returned to league football in January 2010 when he signed for Liam Buckley at Sporting Fingal but he made just 2 league appearances before leaving to sign for Cork City Foras Co-op on 12 July 2010. Over the latter half of the season he made 15 league appearances for Tommy Dunne's side and scored twice.

At the beginning of 2011 Shane joined Monaghan United but he made just 1 league appearance, against Waterford United on 11 March, and left the club shortly afterwards.

During his career Shane won two FAI Cup medals with Longford and, while at Molineux, he played regularly with Robbie Keane and Glen Crowe for both the youths and reserves. He has also played for Meath GAA teams at Minor, U21 & Senior levels.
