Biography
Derek played underage football with Belvedere, earning a place in Manchester United's youth set up in June 1982. He was released by 'United' in 1983 and returned to Ireland where he signed for Home Farm in September 1984, scoring 8 league goals in his three seasons with the Tolka Park club.
In the summer of 1987 Derek signed for Billy Young at Bohemians and scored nine times in the league in his first season at Dalymount Park. He played with Bohs for almost five seasons but left the club in February 1992 to join First Division Monaghan United.
At the end of his first full season with Monaghan, Derek helped the club to promotion via the play-offs. He stayed at Gortakeegan for three years but left in January 1995 to return to Bohemians. He played with Bohs until the end of the 1994/95 season and that summer he returned to Home Farm, who had just formed a relationship with the English side Everton and were newly title Home Farm Everton.
After one season back at Tolka Park, Derek left Home Farm to sign for Michael O'Connor at Longford Town where he played through the 1996/97 season.
