No summer solstice blues for Waterford who beat Bohs

First half goals from Padraig Amond and Conan Noonan saw Waterford claim a deserved 2-1 win over Bohemians at the RSC.

The goals came just before the break for the home side. They had plenty of chances in the second half to add to their scoreline but squandered a few opportunities. Bohs pulled a goal back through Dawson Devoy but were unable to grab a second and they still remain without a draw this season.

It was an even opening 10 minutes of the game. After that in the 13th minute Rhys Brennan got in behind the Waterford defence. He should’ve done better with his effort that went wide of the open goal.

Both sides then won a number of corners as they tried to create scoring opportunities. In the 25th minute Tommy Lonergan’s header was straight at Kacper Chorazka. On 34 minutes Dawson Devoy’s strike was parried by Stephen McMullan but the Blues keeper was able to reclaim it.

As half-time approached the home side pressed. Amond chested the ball down to Lonergan in the 41st minute but his effort was just over. Minutes later they were awarded a penalty after Leigh Kavanagh barged into Lonergan. Amond stepped up and made no mistake for his seventh of the season.

Bohs had a chance soon after to get back on level terms; McMullan came out of goals and was lucky he wasn’t caught out by Colm Whelan. In the third minute of first half stoppage time Waterford went 2-0 up; Noonan with a stunning finish that gave Chorazka no chance.

Waterford started the second half well. Amond’s effort had to be deflected out for a corner in the 54th minute. Chorazka had to punch away Noonan’s free in the 61st minute and seconds later Darragh Leahy should’ve done better with his effort but he side footed the ball over the bar. 

The Bohs netminder pulled off a superb save from Dempsey in the 68th minute as the home side continued to carve out chances. Bohs pulled a goal back in the 71st minute through Devoy. Minutes later Dayle Rooney curled his effort wide.

On 80 minutes Devoy fired his effort way over the bar as Bohs tried to get the equaliser. Down the other end Waterford were searching for a third goal and the ball had to be cleared off the line in the 88th minute.

Ross Tierney was so close to getting Bohs second goal in the 90th minute but his header just went inches wide. Right at the end McMullan pulled off a great save to deny Adam McDonnell as Waterford held on for the win.
