Dylan O’Connell reports from Turner’s Cross
Bohemians opened up their 2020 FAI Cup campaign on Sunday afternoon with a 5-0 victory over College Corinthians at Turner’s Cross.
Two goals from Jamie Mullins combined with a penalty from Keith Ward, a long range shot from Aaron Doran, and a close range finish from Dawson Devoy gave the Premier Division side the victory on Leeside.
This was Corinthians first FAI Cup game in four seasons and they qualified for the competition through their performances in last year’s Intermediate Cup, which saw the club reach the quarter-finals.
Bohemians arrived in Cork looking to continue a recent FAI Cup tradition, which involves beating teams from the Munster Senior League.
It is a trend which dates back to 2009, when the Gypsies hammered Mayfield United at United Park. Since then they have beaten Douglas Hall and Avondale United in the early rounds of the FAI Cup.
It’s a pattern of results which definitely gave Bohemians confidence going into this game, as they dominated possession from the whistle.
A mix up at the back for Corinthians four minutes in gave the Gypsies the lead as Mullins got free and fired from outside the box into the top corner.
It took some time for Bohs to get their second shot of the game, and when they did, Rory Feely fired narrowly across the face of goal.
There wasn’t too much time to be disappointed, as Bohemians doubled their lead minutes later following a flurry of chances.
First, Doran shot from outside the area and Shane Sherlock saved. Then Robbie Mahon attempted to follow up, and Andrew Neville blocked for Corinthians. The ball bounced up and fell into the path of Doran who fired in to make it 2-0.
Corinthians first chance of the game came in the closing minutes of the first half, when a searing run from Evan Browne set the forward run clean through on goal. Stephen McGuinness came out, spread himself, and caught the ball to deny the hosts.
Shane Daly Butz opened the second half for Corinthians with a venomous shot towards the bottom right corner of goal, which stung the palms of McGuinness.
Bohemians got a penalty ten minutes into the second half when Cian Murphy brought Jamie Mullins down inside the box. Referee Ray Matthews did not hesitate to point to the spot and Ward fired into the top corner.
In the final ten minutes, both Mullins and Devoy got free inside the area to score and complete Bohemians rout at Turner’s Cross.
