Friendly Report: Galway United 1 - 2 Shelbourne

Shelbourne emerged victorious in this pre-season encounter with a 2-1 win over Galway United on Saturday afternoon at a bitterly cold Fahy’s Field.
United’s Kevin Devanney opened the scoring in the 6th minute. Ryan Connolly struck the corner-kick, Vinny Faherty headed the ball to the ground. Devanney took his opportunity and struck the ball into the roof of the net, on the half volley, past Greg Murray.
Despite the early goal, this friendly encounter was very much a damp squib. Chances were rare for both sides. For most of the first half, Shelbourne relied on corners as their main attacking threat.
Cian Kavanagh was on kicking duty, but the Galway United defence were never under threat.
Shelbourne’s James English picked up a yellow card for a fierce late challenge on Killian Cantwell with just over twenty minutes gone in the first half.
Cian Kavanagh managed to make the breakthrough for Shelbourne later in the first half with a well struck free kick curled into the bottom corner past Kevin Horgan.
Galway United manager Tommy Dunne changed it up for the second half with Ruairi Keating, Enda Curran, Stephen Walsh, Cormac Raftery and Conor Melody all entering the fray. Aaron Dillon replaced Kevin Horgan in goal.
Shelbourne’s manager, Kevin Doherty, took a more conservative approach with his changes only introducing Darragh Gannon from the bench at half time.
As the cold weather became more problematic for the spectators, any heat in the match also left the pitch.
There was only one chance of note in the second half for Galway and it came late on. Melody made a sweet turn after Colm Horgan picked him out. The young midfielder put too much into his shot and he sent it over the crossbar.
In the dying minutes of the match, Shelbourne won a corner. Ryan Robinson met the ball at the back post and sent it into Galway’s net with a great header.
Despite a late revival from The Tribesmen after conceding a second goal, Shelbourne held on for the win.
