Leinster Senior Cup Report: Newtown United 0 - 2 Bohemians

Bohemians booked their place in the Leinster Senior Cup semi-finals, as a second-half Keith Buckley strike combined with a Conor Murphy penalty helped the Gypsies beat Wicklow side Newtown United 2-0 at The Carlisle Grounds on Sunday afternoon.
It was a first half where Keith Long’s side had a lion share of possession and chances. The first of which fell to James O’Brien, but his effort was saved by Ciaran McGuirl in the Newtown goal after some good work by Karl Moore.
Bohs continued to dominate possession and Robert Duggan became the latest to try his luck for the Gypsies after 15 minutes, as he fired safely wide from the edge of the box after some good holdup play from ex-Bray man Conor Murphy.
On a rare occasion when Newtown managed to get beyond the Bohemians midfield, Desmond Waters won a free kick on the edge of the box, but Dean Odlum’s effort was deflected to safety.
In all fairness to United, they were able to restrict the Dublin side to long range efforts in the first half. Ex-Athlone midfielder James O’Brien saw his effort easily saved by Newtown shot-stopper McGuirl from 35 yards.
It’s not often that Derek Prendergast gets forward from open play, but he did after the half hour mark, but unfortunately for him Moore’s cross just evaded his outstretched foot with the goal gaping.
Bohs began the second half the way they finished the first, by creating chances. The first of the second period fell the way of Conor Murphy, but his effort was saved by the outstretched foot of McGuirl in the United goal.
The Gypsies fashioned a couple of near misses just before the hour. First a quick exchange between Wixted and Moore from a short corner ended with Wixted curling an effort narrowly wide, before a Jake Hyland cross was headed narrowly wide by striker Conor Murphy moments later.
Newtown had a great opportunity to cause a shock and take the lead against the run of play soon after, as Martin Williams found himself through on goal, but instead of having a shot he decided to play the ball across the box where none of his teammates were positioned and the Bohs rear-guard managed to clear with relative ease.
Gypsies wide man Moore was a real threat to Newtown all afternoon and he came close to grabbing the opener, as he curled a free kick narrowly over the Newtown cross-bar from the edge of the box.
Bohs finally managed to get their deserved opener after 73 minutes, as Moore cut in from the right, before pulling the ball back to second half substitute Keith Buckley, who slotted the ball beyond McGuirl and into the left bottom corner.
The Phibsboro side managed to extend their lead just six minutes later, as Conor Murphy converted from the penalty box after a dubious penalty was awarded by referee Simon Rodgers.
Newtown might have pulled one back eight minutes from time, when midfielder Odlum raced away from the Bohs defence, but he pulled up with cramp and the chance past him by.
