Sporting Fingal marked their first FAI Cup tie with a win on Friday night - thanks to two second half goals by striker Peter Hynes. Fiachra McArdle was the provider on both occasions. The result means that Cobh have now crashed out of the competition to lower league opposition, two years in a row.
Aidan Collins, Phillip Byrne and Fiachra McArdle all came into the starting eleven for the home side. Dave Rogers was absent. Cobh boss Stephen Henderson welcomed back from injury Alan Kearney, Shane Guthrie and Kieran O'Reilly. For the second game in succession Cobhs substitutes didn't include a goalkeeper.
Cobh were marginally the better side for the opening half hour. Guthrie went close with a header from a corner and right sided midfielder Michael Mulconry had a shot blocked.
Robbie Doyle then found space on the right wing, but when he crossed low into the box Sporting had no one advanced enough to challenge - Hynes seemed reluctant to attack the cross and in the end made no effort to get on the end of what was dangerous ball.
Doyle was in the thick of things again a minute later. The journeyman attacker struck a shot from thirty five yards, but with Cobh keeper James McCarthy beaten, the ball came back off the crossbar. Conan Byrne then tried his luck from distance, but McCarthy wasn't troubled on this occasion.
Cobhs Graham Cummins was, as always, working hard, and ten minutes before the break he had a great opportunity to give his side the lead. He beat the offside trap but his low shot was well saved by Steve Williams.
Davin O'Neill drew attention on the left and then played a clever pass to Alan Kearney. Kearney made room for a near post shot, but Williams was again on hand to save. Williams was beaten a a few minutes after that by Kieran O'Reilly, but referee Neil Doyle had blown for offside.
On the stroke of half time Doyle again broke free down the right, but once again there was no one in the box to benefit from his teasing cross.
Sporting Fingal took the lead just before the hour mark. Cobh right back Alan Carey was exposed and McArdle raced past him before crossing for Hynes. Hynes had time to take a touch but opted for the first time shot and fired into the bottom corner.
Cobh should have been level four minutes later. O'Neill again caused trouble on the left and then picked out centre back Kevin Murray with a neat cross. Murray met it first time on the volley with his right foot from eight yards, but it went straight at Williams.
The visitors continued to look for an equaliser but failed to create anything clear cut. Midway through the half O'Neill swung in another dangerous cross. Cummins threw himself at it and connected with his head - but all he achieved was to take it away from the better positioned Kearney who was just a yard behind him.
McArdle and Hynes then combined again to give Liam Buckleys side a two goal lead. McArdle broke from his own half and threaded through a perfectly weighted pass. Hynes nipped in and rounded McCarthy before rolling the ball into the empty net.
Sporting were pretty comfortable for the final fifteen minutes, with Cobhs only pressure coming from set pieces. Williams flapped at a corner but saved Brian McCarthys follow up, and Guthrie then sent a header high and wide.
