Bohemians became the first side to advance to the FAI Cup Semi-Finals with a comfortable 6-1 win over Wayside Celtic in today's Quarter Final at the Carlisle Grounds.
Bohs had the first chance in the seventh minute. Neale Fenn’s lay-off found Gary Deegan who controlled before playing the ball out left for John Paul Kelly. Kelly advanced into the area before striking at goal but his effort was palmed away by Wayside keeper Robbie O’Dowd.
Kelly only had to wait six minutes for his next chance and this time he made no mistake. Owen Heary played a neat one-two with Fenn on the right before collecting the ball and charging to the goal-line. When he got there, he swung the ball into the box and Kelly met it on the penalty spot, directing the ball past O’Dowd with his left foot.
The Gypsies doubled their lead in the 19th minute. Kelly was involved again when he struck a long ball over the Wayside defence. Jason Byrne was able to latch onto it and he lobbed the stranded O’Dowd from inside the box.
At 2-0 down, Bohs relaxed and Wayside were able to craft their first real chance in the 26th minute. From a Bobby Hynes throw-in, Cian Hyland headed the ball on. Ian Callaghan trapped the ball with his back to goal before turning and firing straight into the arms of Brian Murphy in the Bohs goal.
Bohs killed the tie with two quick-fire goals at the start of the second half. The first came in the 49th minute through Jason McGuiness. Mark Rossiter swung in a free-kick from inside the halfway line. His cross went all the way to the back post where McGuiness rose highest to head the ball past O’Dowd.
Three minutes later, Bohs were awarded a penalty after Alan Sharkey fouled Kelly inside the area. Jason Byrne stepped up to the spot and slotted the penalty into the net, sending O’Dowd the wrong way.
Wayside did grab a consolation goal on the hour mark. In a carbon copy of Jason McGuiness’ goal for Bohs earlier on, the brothers Wayne and Ian Callaghan combined. Wayne’s free kick landed on the forehead of Ian who nodded the ball into the corner of the goal.
In the 78th minute, Neale Fenn got a much deserved goal. Sub Stephen O’Donnell played a low pass into Fenn on the edge of the six-yard box. Fenn controlled and turned before firing under O’Dowd and into the far corner.
Four minutes later, sub Glen Crowe added another for Bohs. After receiving the ball from Gary Deegan, Crowe stopped the ball before curling an effort from 25-yards. The shot took a big deflection off defender Sharkey and rolled into the Wayside goal, having wrong-footed O’Dowd.
It was a straight-forward win for a competent and highly-efficient Bohs side, who will surely be favourites for the cup now. Wayside Celtic will have to wait another year to cause any further cup upsets.
