Shay’s Biography

Shay started his career in the youth system at Glasgow Celtic but signed for Kenny Dalglish at Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 1994. In his three years at Ewood Park he had loan spells at Swindon Town and Sunderland but followed Dalglish to Newcastle United in the summer of 1997.

In twelve years at St James' Park Shay made 344 league appearances, finally moving on in February 2009 when he signed for Manchester City. He spent two and a half seasons at Eastlands but the emergence of Joe Hart saw his first team opportunities reduced and in the summer of 2011 he joined Aston Villa.

Shay spent four seasons at Aston Villa and amassed over fifty appearances for the club, although most came in his first season there, and he also enjoyed a loan spell at Championship side Middlesborough during the 2013/14 season. He then joined Stoke City in July 2015.

Shay made his senior international debut against Russia in March 1996 and, after the 2016 European Championship, he had 134 caps to his name as he retired from international duty.
