Rotherham United were founded in 1870 as Thornhill FC. They were subsequently known as Thornhill United and Rotherham County before a merger with Rotherham Town in 1925 brought them to their current state of being. The club play their home games at the newly built New York Stadium which is scheduled to open in time for the start of the 2012/12 season..
