Doncaster Rovers History

Doncaster Rovers are a South Yorkshire football team that were formed in 1879 and have traditionally competed in the lower tiers of the Football League, though in recent years they have played in the English Championship.

Donny joined the league in 1901 when they were elected to the old Second Division. The club folded in 1914 and were not reformed until 1920 and two years later they took up residence at the Belle Vue ground which would be their home until 2007.

On New Years Day, 2007, Doncaster moved in to the brand new Keepmoat Stadium and at the end of that season the club won the Johnstones Paint Trophy, their first major honour. The following year they won promotion to the Championship, beating Leeds United 1-0 in the Play-Off final at Wembley Stadium.
