Andrew Dempsey reports from Stradbrook
Cabinteely soared into third place in the First Division table with a hard-fought 1-0 win over second from bottom Galway United at Stradbrook.
Rob Manley scored the decisive goal as Pat Devlin’s side withstood a sustained effort from the Tribesmen during the second half.
Cabinteely came into Friday evening’s encounter seething after last weekend’s deflating defeat at home to Limerick which came after a very positive opening few weeks to the season.
Galway on the other hand also struggled last time out with a disappointing defeat at home to Drogheda United by a solitary goal, a concession which really should have been prevented.
The Stradbrook pitch, which has been heavily criticised in recent weeks, looked improved with Uachtaráin na hÉireann (and former President of Galway United) Michael D. Higgins being a very interested spectator for his beloved Tribesmen.
In terms of changes for both sides, Cabinteely made one with Adam Maher coming out of the starting XI for Sean Hurley while the visitors opted to make two themselves with Wilson Waweru and Mark Hannon coming in for the unavailable Colin Kelly and Joe Collins.
In truth, it was a battle of attrition with neither side able to get their foot on the ball and play in a positive manner.
It was Cabinteely who made the breakthrough though taking the lead through Manley who scored his sixth goal of the season. The opener came after Cabinteely had missed two glorious opportunities from Manley and Conor Keeley early on.
Keeley saw his headed effort go over the bar after a delicious ball in from Dalton while Manley missed a one-on-one with Andreas Werner in the United goal.
However, Cabinteely were to be rewarded for their initiative when Manley headed home close range after a Dalton cross.
Dalton’s initial corner was easily blocked but it returned to the former Bohemians winger who then found the head of the in-form Manley who was never going to miss from that close out.
Galway looked to respond soon after and Waweru went close with his header being tipped onto the bar by Stephen McGuinness who had precious little to do prior to that.
Maurice Nugent then flashed over after a high ball in from Stephen Walsh, before Manley’s effort went wide seconds after for Pat Devlin’s side.
Cabinteely had a golden opportunity to double their lead before the half-time break, but the First Division top scorer Manley ran out of both time and space to slot home after Kieran Marty Waters fed in the talented front man.
Vilius Labutis was denied a highlight reel goal by a highlight reel save from Werner who pulled out all the stops to prevent the Tribesmen going at the break two goals down.
The second period began in a similar enough fashion to that of the first in terms of the abrasive nature of the game.
Galway produced the first opening of the half but Waweru fired over after being fed by the creative Mark Hannon. In truth, the 18-year-old should have levelled matters for the visitors.
Keeley then got his head on another expert ball in from Dalton, but his header just veered wide of Werner’s goal much to the Tribesmen’s relief.
The game petered out significantly during the latter period as Cabinteely effectively ground out a result in what was a poor enough second half at Stradbrook.
Jeff McGowan had Galway’s last major chance of note, but it failed to trouble McGuinness in the Cabo goal.
Manley could have sealed it very late on, but Werner denied the Dubliner but Cabo did enough for their third win of the season.
Cabo have a League Cup clash away to Bohemians to look forward to next while Galway also have Premier Division opposition in the same competition with a trip to Waterford in the offing on Monday evening.
