Iceland set up it's federation in 1930 but didn't play an official match until after the second world war, when they lost 3-0 to Denmark in 1946. They came close to sealing their first ever qualification for a major tournament when they reached the play-offs for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. However, they lost 3-0 on aggregate to Croatia. They were to achieve this the next time around as they qualified second in their group for Euro 2016.
