Slovakia played their first intentional as a sovereign country in 1994, beating the United Arab Emirates 1-0. They qualified for their first major tournament in 2010 as they made it to the World Cup in South Africa. They reached the last round of 16 after overcoming Italy in the group stage to finish second. However, the Netherlands were just too strong for them and they were eliminated. They reached the Round of 16 in Euro 2016 and qualified for Euro 2020.
