Paul began his career at Home Farm before making the move to England where he joined the youth system at Leeds United. Paul spent five years at Elland Road but his only league action came during a loan spell at Scunthorpe United in 2003 when he made 2 appearances for the Irons.
In July 2005 Paul returned to Ireland, signing for Paul Doolin at Drogheda United and he was part of the side that won the 2005 FAI Cup, beating Cork City 2-0 at Lansdowne Road. He also won a league title with the club in 2007 and made 93 league appearances in his four seasons at the club.
In January 2009 Paul signed for Pat Fenlon at Bohemians where he won his second league title later that season, adding a League Cup winners medal that season as Bohs beat First Division Waterford United 3-1 in the final at the RSC.
In 2010 Bohemians were pipped to the title by rivals Shamrock Rovers and amid growing uncertainty over the club's finances, Paul left Dalymount Park at the end of the season having made 66 league appearances in his two years there. In January 2011 Paul signed for English side Doncaster Rovers.
In the summer of 2017 Paul signed with Waterford FC. In November 2017, Paul committed to Waterford for the 2018 season after helping them to promotion the previous year.
In December 2018, Paul signed with Bray Wanderers for the 2019 campaign.
