Ger played for Athlone Town in 2003, making 32 appearances for the club, before signing up with Kildare County for the 2004 season. He played his first two games for County in midfield but thereafter operated as a full back, making a big impression for the Thoroughbreds. He was selected by Eircom League representative team manager Pat Devlin for the International Tournament in Scotland in 2003.

Ger signed for Shamrock Rovers from Kildare County in February 2006 and made 87 league appearances in his three years at the club. Then, in February 2009, he signed a three year deal at Derry City and made 29 league appearances over the year, also appearing in all four of Derry's Europa League ties. But at the end of that season the club were expelled from the league for financial irregularities and, although they reconstituted themselves in the First Division, many players, including Ger, moved on.

The following year, 2010, Ger played for Liam Buckley at newly promoted Sporting Fingal and made 30 league appearances for the 'Ravens'. Shortly before the start of the 2011 season Fingal folded and Ger singed for Pat Fenlon at Bohemians just a few days later, making 30 league appearances throughout the 2011 season.

In December 2011, Ger signed for St. Patrick's Athletic, reuniting with Liam Buckley who managed him at Fingal. He played in 28 of Pats' thirty league games in 2012 and also played in Pats' FAI Cup final side that lost in extra-time to Derry City at the Aviva Stadium. In 2013 Ger was part of the Pats side that won their seventh League title, playing in all 33 of the club's league games. He scored one league goal that year, on a 4-2 defeat against Cork City at Turner's Cross on the last day of the league season.

Ger stayed with St Pats in 2014 and made 24 league appearances as the Saints finished third in the table. Ger also picked up a FAI Cup Winners medal as he was a part of the team that beat Derry City 2-0 in the 2014 final. Injuries restriced Ger's 2015 season and he only made 21 league appearances for the Saints as they finished fourth and won the EA Sports Cup after beating Galway on penalties in the final. 2016 brought another EA Cup winner's medal with Pats beating Limerick 4-1 in the final.

In November 2016, Pats' announced that Ger had taken up the Director of Football role for the club's underage setup along with also becoming one of Liam Buckley's First Team Coaches whilst it was also revealed he had re-signed as a player for the 2017 season.
