Paul began to break through into the UCD first team in 2010 when he made 14 league appearances. He can play in defence or midfield but became a key element of the Students five man midfield in 2011, appearing in all 36 of the club's Premier Division games. He followed that up in 2012 with a further 30 league appearances, cementing his reputation as one of the league's brightest prospects.
In November 2012 Paul left UCD to sign for Mick Cooke at Drogheda United. He was a vital player for Drogheda in the 2013 season, making 30 appearances for the club in the league. Drogheda finished eighth in the Premier Division that year and were treble bridesmaids in the Cups as they were runners up to Shamrock Rovers in the EA Sports Cup and Setanta Cup, and also lost out to Sligo Rovers in the 2013 FAI Cup Final, in which O'Conor scored in the 3-2 defeat.
In November 2013, Paul signed for FAI Cup winners Sligo Rovers for the 2014 season. He made 28 league appearances as well as scoring five goals. Paul also played in three of Sligo's four Europa League qualifiers but at the end of the 2014 season he was on the move again and signed for Martin Russell at Limerick FC ahead of their 2015 campaign.
Paul was a key part of the Limerick team in 2015 and made 32 league appearances in the Premier Division, scoring four goals in the process. However, Limerick were forced into a relegation play-off on the last day of the season, which they lost over two legs to Finn Harps. Their dip into the First Division proved brief and in 2016 Limerick stormed to the First Division title with Paul hitting eleven goals from 26 league appearances. He also played in the club's EA Cup final defeat to St Patrick's Athletic.
Paul continued with Limerick in 2017 but in July of that year he was transfer-listed and left the club a few days later.
In January 2018, Paul signed for Bray Wanderers for the 2018 season.
In January 2019, Paul signed with Longford Town. Paul retired from the League of Ireland in December 2019.
