Liam made his Cliftonville debut against Glenavon on the 13th August 2008. He scored 18 goals in 53 league appearances over the next two seasons, and in August 2010 he signed for German side Werder Bremen.

Liam spent a year in Germany, during which time he made his international debut for Northern Ireland against Scotland in the Nations Cup in Dublin. He played for Bremen's reserve side and returned to Cliftonville in January 2012. After two seasons, he moved to Ross County in Scotland.

Liam was with Ross County when he was included in Northern Ireland's preliminary squad of 28 for the 2016 European Championship. However, he was cut from the final squad.
