Stephen made an immediate impression when thrown into the first team for Finn Harps in the middle of the 2009 season. The 19 year old was signed from Inishowen League side Clonmany Shamrock for the club’s youth team, but soon found himself as a vital member of the first team squad.

He made his senior debut on 25 July 2009 against Wexford Youths at Finn Park and played 16 times between then and the end of the season, scoring two goals – against Sporting Fingal on 25 September and Athlone Town on 9 October.

Stephen scored twice more for Harps in 2010 and made 32 league appearances, but in January of 2011 he signed for newly promoted Derry City. In his first season at Brandywell Stephen scored three league goals in 33 league appearances and 2012 saw him score nine times in 23 league games. He also played in Derry's FAI Cup final win over St Patrick's Athletic and impressed sufficiently to win a contract at English side Nottingham Forest which was signed off on 3 January 2013.
