Peter is a Scottish goalkeeper who started his career as an 18 year old at Airdrie United in 2002. He made just one senior appearance in two years at the club before a short spell at Junior side Kilsyth Rangers brought him to the attention of Ayr United.

Peter made 6 appearances Ayr before leaving the Somerset Park club at the end of the 2004/05 season. After a successful trial at Clyde he signed for the Cumbernauld side at the start of 2005/06 and spent three years at Broadwood Stadium before being released in June of 2009.

He didn't have to wait long to find a new club and signed for Dundalk on 8 July '09, a move which saw him rejoin forces with ex-Clyde boss and player Joe Miller. Cherrie dislodged Chris Bennion almost immediately and made his competitive debut for the Lilywhites in their 3-0 win at Galway United on 17 July.

Cherrie went on to make a total of 16 league and two FAI Cup appearances in 2009, and in 2010 he made 33 league appearances, keeping ten clean sheets in the process. At the end of the 2010 Airtricity League season, Cherrie was voted as Dundalk's Player of the Year and went on to make 32 more league appearances in the 2011 season.

2012 was a difficult season for the Lilywhites with Peter adding 30 league appearances to his total as the club escaped relegation with a play-off victory against Waterford United. The following year saw a complete reversal of fortune under new manager Stephen Kenny and Peter was ever-present as the club finished second to League champions St Patrick's Athletic.

Peter stayed with Dundalk for the 2014 season and started all thirty-three league games for the club, keeping sixteen clean sheets, as they went on better than last year and won the league title, beating Cork City on the last day of the season. It was the perfect high to finish upon as Peter left Dundalk at the end of the season after five and a half seasons with the Lilywhites.

On 14 January Peter signed for Danske Premiership side Cliftonville. He then moved back to the League of Ireland by signing with Bray Wanderers in July of 2015. He went on to play in every single game thereafter, making 16 league appearances and keeping five clean sheets as Bray finished eighth in the Premier Division. Peter signed a new two-year deal with Bray following the conclusion of the 2015 season and was again ever-present, playing in all 33 league games as Bray finished sixth in the Premier Division under new manager Harry Kenny.

In January 2018, Cork signed Peter for the new campaign.

In December 2018, Peter left Cork and went and signed for Derry in a bid to start as number one.

In February 2021, Peter signed for Dundalk.
