Packie started his career at local Derry side Institute before going to Scotland in 2007 to sign for Hibernians, He never made a first team appearance while at Easter Road but went on loan to Stenhousemuir where he made 12 league appearances in the Scottish third division.

Packie returned to Ireland following his release from Hibs in September 2008 and, after a brief dalliance with Dungannon Swifts, he signed for Finn Harps in April 2009. He made his debut for Harps as a half-time substitute in a a 4-1 League Cup defeat to Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds on May 4th.

He made 23 league appearances in his first year at Finn Park and was appointed Club Captain ahead of the 2010 season. Packie added 30 league appearances in 2010 and another 20 in 2011, cementing his reputation as one of the First Division's leading central defenders.

Im January 2012 Packie played in Derry City's programme of pre-season friendlies but did not sign a contract at the club. He spent some time playing GAA with Donegal and also played football with Drumkeen United in the Ulster Senior League. But after two seasons out of league football Packie re-signed with Finn Harps in December 2013. He returned to Harps colours on the opening weekend of the 2014 season and played in 23 of the club's twenty-eight First Division games that year, scoring once when he snatched a last gasp equaliser against Wexford Youths in May.

Packie signed on for the 2015 season but missed out on much of the start of the season through injury. He came back to play 10 league games, scoring once in a 2-0 win over Cobh Ramblers, before going on to play in all four play-off matches as Finn Harps were promoted to the Premier Division after overcoming UCD and Limerick. And in 2016 Packie made 26 league appearances as Harps retained their Premier Division spot with a tenth place league finish.

In January 2018, Packie joined Ballinamallard United.
