Aiden began his career in the youth team at Glasgow club Queens Park, moving to Celtic in 2001. he made his first team debut against Hearts in April 2004 and went on to make 185 league appearances in his time at 'Paradise'. In August 2010 Aiden sighed for Russian side Spartak Moscow in a deal reputed to be worth £11.5m.

He went on to make nearly a hundred appearances in all competitions for the Russian side over the course of four seasons before signing for Premier League side Everton in January 2014. He went on to make over thirty league appearances over the course of the season and a half before finding himself outside of the first team for the 2015/16 season. He then joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan in Febraury 2016.

Aiden has previously been called up to the Republic of Ireland senior squad and, ahead of the 2016 European Championship, has 82 caps and 5 goals to his name. He was included in the Republic of Ireland's final squad for the 2016 European Championship.
