In November 2001 Ger signed for Welsh side New Saints. He spent six seasons there, making 233 league appearances and winning three league titles and one Welsh Cup. He also took part in European competition, playing in ties against Manchester City and Liverpool.

Derry claimed the First Division title in 2010 with Ger making 31 league appearances along the way. As the club returned to premier Division football in 2011 Ger played in all 36 of the club's league games. Ger remained first choice 'keeper in 2013 and played every game for the club in league and Cup competition, thus adding another 33 league appearances to his career total.

In 2014 Ger made a further 30 league appearances for Derry, keeping nine clean sheets, as they finished eighth in the Premier Division table. He also played in the 2014 FAI Cup Final, which Derry lost 2-0 to St Pats. In 2015, Ger made 29 league appearances, keeping eleven clean sheets, as Derry finished seventh in the Premier Division and the following year Ger missed just one of Derry's thirty-three league matches as Kenny Shiels guided the Candystripes to a third place finish and European qualification.

Gerard re-signed with Derry for the 2018 season. At the end of the 2018 season Ger left Derry to seek a new challenge at the age of 37.

Ger then signed with Crusaders in December 2018, signing an 18 month deal.
