Matt’s Biography

Mathew David Ryan (born 8 April 1992) is an Australian professional goalkeeper.

Born in Sydney, Matt played youth football for Marconi Stallions, Blacktown City and Central Coast Mariners. He made his senior debut for Blacktown before moving to the Mariners' senior squad in 2010. In 2013, Ryan moved to Europe where he signed for Club Brugge in Belgium. He played there for two years before joining Valencia in 2015.

During his two seasons in Spain Matt also had a loan spell at Genk, back in Belgium, but in 2017 he moved to England where he had a four year stint at Brighton & Hove Albion, which included a brief loan period at Arsenal. In 2021 Matt retuened to Spain for a one-season spell at Real Sociedad, and in August 2022 he signed for FC Copenhagen in Denmark.

Matt made his senior international debut in 2012, and established himself as Australia's first-choice goalkeeper, effectively succeeding his childhood idol Mark Schwarzer. He played at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups as well as the 2015 and 2019 Asian Cups, winning the Best Goalkeeper award at the 2015 tournament which his country won on home soil.
