James played for Ayrfield United in the AUL Premier A. He then moved to Kilbarrack United in 2013/14 and was part of the team that played against Cork City in the second round of the 2013 FAI Cup 2013. In 2014/15 he moved to his own local club of Darndale FC, where he scored 45 goals in the season.

In June 2015, James signed for Shelbourne ahead of the second half of the First Division season. He went on to have a productive end to the season, scoring five times in thirteen appearances, as Shelbourne finished fourth in the 2015 First Division. In November 2016, James re-signed with Shelboure for the 2017 season after finishing as the clubs top scorer during the 2016 campaign with 11 goals in 25 appearances.

In October 2017 James signed on for the 2018 campaign with Shelbourne.
