Steve was born in Aberystwyth in Wales and represented his country at Under 15, 16, 18 and 21 levels. He began his career at Coventry City where he spent three years before moving to Cardiff City where he spent another four years.

In 1997 Steve arrived in the League of Ireland, signing for Dundalk, where he spent two seasons and made 65 league appearances. At the start of the 1999/00 season he signed for Shelbourne where he would make over 200 league appearances over the following eight seasons.

Steve made his Shelbourne debut against Galway United in August 1999 and went on to play a major part in Shelbourne's double success in 1999/2000, keeping 17 clean sheets in the league and being voted Player of the Year in 2002/03.

"Willo" was released by Shelbourne following the League title win of 2006, having come to the end of his contract, and signed for Bray Wanderers on February 1st 2007. He made 27 league appearances for the Seagulls that year but moved on to sign for Sporting Fingal in 2008, their first season in League football.

In 2009 Steve was on the move again, joining Drogheda United where he made 24 league appearances over the '09 season. In January 2010 he returned to Shelbourne, signing for Dermot Keely as cover for first choice 'keeper Dean Delany and made 3 League and Cup appearances over 2010.

Steve returned to Drogheda United at the start of the 2011 season for the briefest of stints as goalkeeping coach and had left the club within weeks of joining.
